In a society where we're constantly juggling a million different things — and surgically attached to our phones — it's no wonder we're all so distracted. Mindfulness offers a powerful and practical antidote.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn as "paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally." It is the practice of consciously directing your attention to what is happening right now, without getting caught up in past regrets or future anxieties.
1. Practice It During Mundane Activities
You don't need to set aside dedicated meditation time to practise mindfulness. Routine activities like brushing your teeth, washing dishes, or walking to work are perfect opportunities. Focus fully on the sensations, sounds, and details of what you are doing rather than letting your mind wander.
2. Savour Your Meals
Eating without distractions is one of the most effective daily mindfulness practices. Put down your phone, turn off screens, and focus entirely on the flavours, textures, and aromas of your food. This practice improves digestion, increases satisfaction, and helps you tune into your body's hunger and fullness cues.
3. Do a 'Body Scan'
Several times throughout the day, pause and perform a brief body scan. Starting from the top of your head and moving down to your feet, notice any areas of tension, discomfort, or sensation without trying to change them. This practice develops body awareness and often reveals where you are holding stress.
Mindfulness is a skill that develops with consistent practice. Begin with just a few minutes per day and gradually extend the moments of conscious presence throughout your routine.
