Anxiety, stress, and exhaustion are among the most common psychological challenges of the 21st century, driven by overwork, poor diet, sleep deprivation, and the constant pressure of modern life. While spa treatments offer powerful relief, simple breathing techniques provide an immediate tool you can use anywhere.
When we are stressed, our breathing becomes shallow and fast, which activates the sympathetic nervous system and worsens feelings of anxiety. Conscious breathing reverses this response, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and signalling to the body that it is safe to relax.
Basic Breathing
Begin with simple, conscious breathing: inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 1 to 5, then exhale gently through your mouth for the same count. Continue for at least five minutes to allow the nervous system to settle.
Belly Breathing
The American Institute of Stress recommends 20 to 30 minutes of belly breathing each day to reduce anxiety and stress. Place one hand on your chest and one on your stomach. Breathe in deeply so that your stomach rises while your chest remains relatively still. Allow your belly to expand naturally, then exhale slowly.
4-7-8 Breathing
The 4-7-8 technique is one of the most effective breathing methods for immediate stress relief. Inhale quietly through your nose for 4 counts, hold your breath for 7 counts, then exhale completely through your mouth with a whoosh sound for 8 counts. Repeat this cycle 3–4 times.
- Inhale through the nose for 4 counts
- Hold the breath for 7 counts
- Exhale through pursed lips for 8 counts
- Repeat 3–4 times for best results
Complement Breathing with Spa Treatments
For deeper, more sustained stress relief, combine regular breathing practice with professional spa treatments. Massage therapy, Turkish hammam sessions, and wellness treatments at Carisma Spa work synergistically with breathwork to restore true balance.
